De Haas-van Alphen effect in graphite intercalation compounds with AsF5, HNO3 and rubidium

The de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect in HOPG intercalated with AsF5, HNO3 and rubidium has been investigated. In C8nAsF5 where the stage number n = 2, 3 and 4, the observed dHvA periods ranging from 1.1 × 10-7 to 1.6 × 10-6 Oe-1 are quite different for different stages. The three-dimensional (3D) rigid band model of graphite, supplemented by a band folding due to the c-axis superlattice, has been applied to give a partial explanation of the observed periods. In CHNO3 compounds some periods, e.g., about 1.75 × 10-6 Oe-1, are commonly observed for different stage compounds, while the other periods observed are different for different stages; this fact suggests a stage independent 2D-like Fermi surface with stage dependent substructures. In the stage 1 compound of rubidium, C8Rb, three periods are found and compared with Inoshita et al.'s calculation of the Fermi surface of C8K which should be similar to that of C8Rb.
