Data assimilation for turbulent flows

In this study, the ensemble Kalman filter and the ensemble transform Kalman filter, sequential advanced data assimilation methods, were employed to estimate angle of attack, inflow Mach number, and turbulent viscosity of turbulent flows. The transonic flows around the NACA0012 and the RAE 2822 airfoils were considered here. The surface pressures of experiments were employed for data assimilation. The computations with the estimated angle of attack, inflow Mach number, and turbulent viscosity by data assimilation improved discrepancies between ordinary computations with turbulence models and experiments. These results suggested that data assimilation was effective to estimate the proper angle of attack, inflow Mach number, and turbulent viscosity for computations.
