Crystal structure, thermoelectric power and superconductivity in La1.6 - xNd0.4SrxCuO4

The correlation between the crystal structure, thermoelectric power and superconductivity has been investigated in the tetragonal low-temperature (TLT) phase of La1.6 - xNd0.4SrxCuO4 with 0.10 ≤ × ≤ 0.25. The crystal structure has been studied by means of high-resolution powder neutron diffraction and the Rietveld analysis. It has been found that both the rhombic distortion of the CuO4 basal plane and the change of the thermoelectric power in the TLT phase are greatest at x ∼ 0.115. Therefore, the local minimum of the superconducting transition temperature at x = 0.115 is concluded to be due to the drastic change in the electronic structure in cooperation with the large rhombic distortion of the CuO4 basal plane in the TLT phase.
