Correlation between vortex distribution and electronic inhomogeneity in bi2sr2cacu2o8+δ as probed by STM/STS

In order to investigate the correlation between vortex distribution and inherent electronic inhomogeneity, we have performed scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) of optimally doped Bi2Sr 2CaCu2O8+δ single crystals at 4.3 K under 8 T. Vortices have been successfully visualized by mapping differential tunneling conductance at 12.5 meV, which was substantially enhanced around the vortex cores. The vortices tended to form an ordinary triangular lattice with a spacing of a0=1.07/B in a short range of ∼ a0, but the triangular correlation was almost missing in a longer scale. By comparing the vortex distribution pattern and gap map, we concluded that pseudogap regions predominantly pin down vortices.
