Contraction of porous nickel during low temperature oxidation

Peculiar contraction and creep behavior were investigated with Ni-based anode material upon intermediated temperature oxidation. Volume change of a porous Ni was measured using a laser profilometer in oxidizing atmospheres at elevated temperatures. Contraction occurred in the temperature range around 500°C, and particularly at 473°C, a marked shrinkage of more than 8% was observed. Creep characteristics was tested with a small punch equipment with changing the atmosphere from reducing to oxidizing gases. At 400°C and 500°C, the creep rate dramatically increased when the oxidizing gas was introduced. These results suggest that a reducing atmosphere must be maintained to protect the anode from oxidation in shut-down operation for an anode-supported SOFC.
