Comparative taxonomic studies on late Eocene intermediate-water benthic foraminifera from Japan, US Pacific Coast, southwestern Europe and New Zealand lead to the recognition of two late Eocene intermediate-water faunal provinces: the North Pacific and the South Pacific-Tethyan-Atlantic provinces. The faunal similarity between Oregon-Washington and Hokkaido in species rank is 28% and that between southwestern Europe and New Zealand is 11%. These percentages are relatively high as compared to the 3-6% similarities (0% endemic species) in other comparable data sets. -from Author
