Collisional deexcitation of the excited rare gas atoms in resonant states: The Watanabe-Katsuura theory revisited

The cross sections for collisional deexcitation of excited rare gas atoms in resonant states by a wide range of atoms and molecules were measured in order to examine the extension of the Watanabe-Katsuura (WK) theory in terms of experiments. The deexcitation cross sections measured, together with those determined for other collision systems in previous experiments, were compared with two WK cross sections, i.e., one calculated using the photoionization cross section and the other the photoabsorption cross section. Evidence was obtained that the extended WK theory is as valuable for the evaluation of the cross sections for deexcitation of excited rare gas atoms (Ne, Ar, and Kr) in resonant states by molecules as the original WK theory is for the evaluation of the cross sections for deexcitation by atoms.
