Charge Density Waves of Two-Dimensional Electrons in Strong Magnetic Fields

Ground state properties of the two-dimensional electron system in strong magnetic fields are investigated in the case where the ground Landau level is half-filled. Using the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation, the ground state is shown to be an extremely anharmonic, exchange-predominated Wigner crystal, i.e., a kind of charge density waves. The calculated one-particle spectra corresponding to propagating vacancies and interstitials show that this Wigner crystal is a zero-gap semiconductor.
