A numerical method is developed for calculating a radiating axisymmetric flowfield accounting for nonequilibrium thermochemistry. Solutions of the flow with radiation are obtained in a fully coupled manner using a fully implicit time-marching method by the use of a full block matrix inversion. The method can be used in calculating both air and carbonaceous gas flows. Nonequilibrium radiation from a blunt body shock layer is calculated by the present method at a speed of up to 13.4 km/s. The calculated results are compared with existing experimental data. Fair agreement is obtained between the calculation and the experiment for the flight velocity below 10 km/s. For the case of 13.4 km/s, the calculated nonequilibrium radiative heat flux underestimates the measured value by a factor of 10.
