Ring-opening polymerization of 2-methyl-2-oxazoline produces poly(N-acetylethylenimine) (POZO), which can be regarded as a polymer homologue of N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc). A considerable effort of research has also been made in the so-called 'Sol-Gel' method, by which the metal oxide matrix can be prepared under mild conditions. The authors report a combination of POZO and sol-gel glass. The combination at molecular level may be expressed by a term of 'block copolymer' consisting of segments of organic (POZO) and inorganic (silica) polymers. The resulting 'hybrid polymer' is expected to show novel and promising properties from the viewpoint of the characteristics of POZO.
