Bicarbonate decreases inhibitory effects of fluoride on acid production by Actinomyces naeslundii

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of bicarbonate and fluoride on the acid production ability of Actinomyces naeslundii. In the presence of bicarbonate, the inhibitory effect of fluoride was decreased, suggesting that Actinomyces species have a unique mechanism to escape or weaken the inhibitory effect of fluoride. This might be relevant to that Actinomyces species has a bicarbonate-assimilating pathway for succinate production in addition to the glycolytic pathway.
