Ballistic range experiment on the low sonic boom characteristics of supersonic biplane

The supersonic biplane model was designed with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for the examination of its low boom characteristic. In order to avoid going into unstart condition without accelerating to the designed Mach number, the location of the winglets was examined. Before actually building the supersonic biplane model, the leading-edge thickness was considered so that the experimental model can be built with a reasonable cost. Then the designed model was launched with the ballistic range for the design verification. Schlieren image was captured to understand the shock wave pattern around the wings. As a result, the designed supersonic biplane flew with the desirable wave cancellation, without going into the unstart condition, as the CFD simulation predicted.
