Radon variations related to earthquakes have been reported by many researchers. The main studies focused on radon in soil gas and in groundwater. An anomalous atmospheric radon concentration increased before the 1995 Kobe earthquake. The increase was well fitted to a power-law of the time-to-earthquake. The increase and other preseismic changes (groundwater radon and groundwater discharge rate) were linked to fluctuation in crustal strain. Radon can readily be released into the air when subjected to a changing crustal strain.Considering that radon is readily released into the air when subjected to a changing crustal strain,it is presumed that convection of radon also occurs due to some mechanism of pressure application and that this exhibits a major role in increased radon emanation. Comparing radon anomaly in soil gas and in groundwater, this paper shows that atmospheric radon concentration is usefulas a proxy that reflects mean strain occurring over a large area.
