We investigated ten allozyme markers and ten morphometric traits in nine collections of Mytilus galloprovincialis and one collection of M. trossulus from the East Sea and surrounding waters. Strong genetic differentiation between the two taxa was obtained for nine of ten loci (p < 0.0001). With standard discriminant function analysis and a step-by-step procedure performed for nine indices and ten loci scores, two distinct groups were apparent One group was represented by M. galloprovincialis and several misclassified individuals, and the other by M. trossulus with one misclassified individual. The most valuable morphometric traits for the discrimination of M. galloprovincialis and M. trossulus were ligament morphology and posterior retractor position. A less valuable but still important trait was the posterior adductor scar length. Hybrids were detected in Russian, Japanese, and Korean waters, and alien genotypes for a species-specific marker, the MPI* locus, were found in a local settlement in Korea. The hybrid zone investigated was not yet stable. Hybrids were not as abundant as in waters of the U.K. or the U.S.A., and their frequencies in the samples varied annually from 1.6 ± 0.9% to 8.9 ± 1.7%. Asymmetric genetic introgression, i.e., M. trossulus → M. galloprovincialis, was apparent in the studied hybrid zone.
