Aerodynamic measurements of AGARD-B model at high angles of attack by 1-m magnetic suspension and balance system

The purpose of this study is to measure the aerodynamic forces acting on an aircraft model at high angles of attack with a wind tunnel test using a magnetic suspension and balance system (MSBS). In the magnetic support of the model at high angles of attack, the control characteristics of the model’s motion by MSBS change. The change of the control characteristic might cause an undesirable additional motion in the model’s control. As a result, it is difficult to maintain the evaluation accuracy of a magnetic force. Therefore, the model control system at high angles of attack was proposed in consideration of the change in the magnetic force applied to the magnet in the model. Furthermore, the efficient force evaluation method at high angles of attack excluding rolling moment is presented analytically. As a result, the forces acting on the model in a wide range of angles of attack were evaluated with an error range of about 4%. Finally, three components of the aerodynamic forces acting on the AGARD-B model were acquired at a flow speed of 15 m/s and angles of attack in the range of [0, 30] degrees.
