title = "Advances in artificial bilayer lipid membranes as a novel biosensing platform: From drug-screening to self-assembled devices",
abstract = "Because of their unique structures and properties, self-assembled bilayer lipid membranes are a subject of intense interest. In this Highlight Review, we summarize recent progress made in research related to bilayer lipid membranes, including the formation of stable free-standing lipid membranes, applications of artificial lipid bilayers as a model cell membrane to study biological processes, and new bio-hybrid devices based on bilayer lipid membranes.",

note = "Funding Information: Ayumi Hirano-Iwata received her PhD in chemistry from The University of Tokyo in 1998. After spending three years as a postdoctoral fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), she was appointed as a research associate at Nihon University. In 2003, she moved to the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), UK, after being granted a JSPS postdoctoral fellowship for Research Abroad (20032005). In 2005, she continued her research as a postdoctoral fellow of NIMR. In 2006, she joined Tohoku University to work in the field of bioelectronics and was promoted to Professor at the same university in 2016. Her current research interests include fabrication of nanostructures, lipid bilayers, neuronal systems and their applications to electronic devices and biosensors.
