Advanced structure and deformation pattern of al based alloys foamed with calcium carbonate agent

The present study presents metallic foams based on Al, Al-7Si, and Al-Zn-Mg alloys, that were foamed via Alporas route by using new CaCO 3-foaming agent and currently employed TiH2-powder. By considering the damage behaviour of the cell wall constituents determined in nano- and microindentation experiments, mechanical response under static uniaxial compression of foams was studied and discussed. Application of CaCO3 offered significant performance gains such as finer cells as well as clearing the cell walls from undesirable low ductile Ti-rich particles and Al-Ti based intermetallic compounds being usually formed when employing TiH2-agent. Because of this, CaCO3-foams showed more uniform macroscopic deformation compared to TiH2-foams, where pronounced collapse events associated with brittle failure of the cell walls was found.
