Activities of the components and phase relations in Zn-Fe-O and ZnO-FeO-SiO2 systems

Phase relations in the Zn-Fe-O system and the ZnO-FeO-SiO2 system, which are of considerable practical importance in the extractive metallurgy of zinc, have been studied at 1100 K by equilibrating synthetic samples in evacuated sealed quartz tubes. The phases were determined and identified by the X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction studies of the quenched samples. The partial pressures of oxygen were measured by an electromotive force (e.m.f.) method using the stabilized zirconia solid electrolytes, the activities were then derived. The activity of zinc oxide in the zinc sinter was estimated at unity from the present result and our previous results regarding the binary system ZnO-SiO2, the ternary systems ZnO-SiO2-CaO, ZnO-SiO2-Al2O3 and ZnO-SiO2-MgO. The relation between the reaction path of the iron-reduction distillation process and activities of ZnO, FeO in the Zn-Fe-O system at 1100 K is discussed.
