Subsurface cracks in ceramics, induced by indentation and sliding tests, were examined by acoustic microscopy, and new information on the behavior of these cracks was obtained. The average length and initiation probability of subsurface lateral cracks were measured from acoustic images and found to depend significantly on the material used. The ratio of fracture toughness K//C for lateral fractures to fracture toughness K//I//C for radial fractures also varied depending on the materials used. In the wear tracks of an HIP alumina plate subjected to repeated sliding contacts against a hot-pressed alumina ball, many subsurface cracks were observed in acoustic images when the depth of the wear track was larger than the initial roughness due to grinding.
