A collision-induced-desorption (CID) phenomenon was investigated using a new combination system of molecular beam and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). We observed the desorption of N2 from the Ni(100) surface induced by collision with hyperthermal Xe atoms. The Xe atoms were accelerated up to 1.23 eV in a supersonic molecular beam by seeding in He gas. The FTIR spectra of N2 on the Ni(100) surface were taken during the CID process. The cross section of CID depended on the incident energy of Xe. For 1.23 eV, it was 1.2 ± 0.09 Å2. The relationship between binding energy of N2 on Ni(100) surface and the threshold of incident energy of Xe for CID was discussed.
