A sponge layer for accurate aeroacoustic simulations using high-order discontinuous galerkin methods

Performances of a sponge layer for non-reflective treatment are numerically assessed on aeroacoustic simulations using high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods. Particularly, effects of grid parameters in the sponge layer on the sponge performances are carefully investigated through high-order simulations of the vortex/sponge interaction with the tenth-order DG method. After exploring the optimal sponge parameters, it is found that the sponge layer has an ability to suppress spurious high frequency acoustic waves occurring when the vortex is under-resolved and that the grid in the sponge layer can be coarse. On the other hand, it is also shown that too coarse mesh results in the remains of the spurious waves, which indicates that there are the optimal parameters for the sponge grid.
