A 24-year old male with retinitis pigmentosa manifested yellowish white tumors in both fundi. The tumor showed a nodular, mulberry-like surface. It was located peripapillary, nasal to the disc RE and inferior to the disc LE. Smaller-sized tumors were also disseminated over the retina in both eyes. In view of the fact that astrocytes are present in the posterior retina, we thought the tumors not to be optic disc drusen, but presumably astrocytic hamartoma. Astrocytic hamartoma is known to occur in patients with tuberous sclerosis or neurofibromatosis. Our case seems to indicate that astrocytic hamartoma may occur in association with retinitis pigmentosa.
