Wave field in the efflux of river water

Abstract

A computing system for both current fields of river water efflux and wave fields in the current is developed as a basic approach of sediment transport research near river mouths. The current fields obtained through the integration of shallow water equations with the horizontal diffusion show different spread characteristics depending on the river discharge. Next, wave deformation in the current fields is computed based on the parabolic equation with a breaking model. Numerical instability due to the introduction of the breaking model is removed by a numerical low-pass filter. Current velocities for the normal and flood discharge of the river are compared with wave velocities such as phase velocities and mass transport velocities to find the areas that the current is effective on the wave refraction or sediment transport.
