The CO//2 and steam gasification rate as well as the surface area of four different chars and a graphite were measured at various levels of conversion. The effect of the BET surface area on the gasification rate of the chars and the graphite was evaluated and discussed on the basis of the mechanism of gasification. Under the conditions where the dissociative adsorption of steam and CO//2 controls the overall rate, the gasification reactivities were closely related to the BET surface area.
