The authors propose a unified design method for state-space digital filters using a system balancing concept. An approximation method that results in balanced realizations is used, applying a newly discovered relation between the balanced realizations and the optimal realizations of digital filters. The approximation and the synthesis problems of the filter design can thus be solved simultaneously and efficiently to obtain suboptimal digital filters which approximate given impulse responses closely and suppress limit cycles.
