Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy of carbon onions

Abstract

The optical properties of spherical and polyhedral carbon onions were studied in relation to the strong hump centered at 217.5 nm (4.6 μm-1) in the interstellar-dust extinction curve. The ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra of onions prepared by thermal annealing of diamond nanoparticles were measured. Theoretical calculations for the spherical and polyhedral carbon onions were also carried out to explain the experimental spectra.
