Abstract
The optical soliton transmission system has great potential for providing high speed and long distance communication and field experiments on this system have been reported using installed fiber optical networks. The polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is a serious problem and could prove to be a major factor limiting high bit rate transmission systems. The transmission quality of high speed 40 and 80 Gbit/s soliton system are evaluated using a Q-factor, for various PMD conditions, and show for the first time that in-line synchronous modulation is especially useful for extending the transmission distance in the presence of large PMD.
