Truncation error in numerical tsunami simulation

Abstract

The truncation error in numerical simulation of tsunami is investigated by using exact and approximate solutions of discretized equations. From the analysis of one-dimensional initial value problem, it is indicated that numerical error caused by the discretization depends on the Fourier spectrum of the initial wave profile, the travel distance from the origin and the Courant number. The applicability of the one-dimensional analysis to the two-dimensional problem is also examined.
