Abstract
Thermal stress fracture behaviour of zirconia based ceramics are described. Although partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ) and tetragonial zirconia polycrystals (TZP) ceramics show superior mechanical properties such as high fracture strength/fracture toughness, the thermal shock resistance of zirconia ceramics is anomalously low. The thermal stress fracture mechanism and improvement of the thermal shock resistance are discussed.
