Abstract
Thermal expansion of modified orthorhombic beta -Mg2SiO4 was measured by XRD in the T range 20o-800oC. Gruneisen's theory of thermal expansion was applied to the data, yielding thermal expansion coefficients alpha a 9.14, alpha b 5.46, alpha c 5.92 and alpha v 20.6 X 10-6/K at 293 K. The magnitude of the volume expansion coefficient of beta -Mg2SiO4 is located between those of gamma - and alpha - phases. beta -Mg2SiO4 is found to be a significantly anisotropic material both in thermal expansion and elasticity.-T.R.
