The state of the art in Ground Penetrating Radar and the regulation of electromagnetic wave

Abstract

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) has been practically deployed since 1980's. Nowadays GPR is a standard methodology in detection of buried pipes, inspection of inner structure of concrete, monitoring of concrete pavement and detection of void. The improvement of the capability of personal computers in data storage and processing drastically developed the GPR signal processing on site and advanced data analysis afterwards. Recently, accurate 3 dimensional GPR imaging is introduced by using the simultaneous data acquisition of GPR and high-precision GPS, and array GPR systems. GPR is ultra wide band (UWB) radar system, and interferences to other wireless instruments have always to be paid attention. We started preparation of establishing general regulation of the effective use for GPR in the community in Japan.
