The interaction of a guanidinium monolayer with ATP and AMP, as revealed by surface potential and UV absorption measurements

Abstract

A guanidinium functionalized monolayer has been observed to interact distinctly with small concentrations of AMP and ATP in the subphase. Specific binding ratios (1:1 and 1:3 for AMP and ATP, respectively) were found for wide ranges of the substrate concentration, as determined by ESCA analysis of transferred monolayers. The binding of AMP caused diminished ordering in the monolayer, whereas ATP binding improved the parallel orientation of the monolayer. A large change in the surface potential was induced by the interaction of ATP with the monolayer.
