Abstract
In order to improve the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of Al2O3 in caustic alkaline solutions, ceria-doped tetragonal zirconia particles were dispersed at the grain boundaries of Al2O3. The fracture toughness and fracture strength of Al2O3/ceria-doped tetragonal zirconia composites greatly increased with increasing content of the ceria-doped tetragonal zirconia particles. Alumina ceramics were susceptible to attack by concentrated NaOH solutions above 150°C, whereas no noticeable corrosion was observed for ceria-doped tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Ce-TZP) below 250°C. The degree of weight loss of Al2O3/Ce-TZP composites in NaOH solutions appreciably decreased with increasing Ce-TZP content up to 40 mol%.
