Abstract
A field ion-scanning tunnelling microscope (FI-STM) was constructed and was applied to the investigation of the oxygen adsorption on the Ag(110) surface. Atomic oxygen is mobile on the Ag surface at room temperature until it finds two free mobile Ag atoms to form a AgOAg linear chain along the <001> direction (the added row model). It was documented that an additional new type of oxygen adsorption exists over the AgOAg linear chains with much weaker bonding to the Ag substrate.
