Texture and microstructure in continuously cast gamma titanium-aluminide sheets

Abstract

Direct strip casting is an effective way for near-net-shaping of sheets of poor workability materials. Twin roll casting is applied to production of gamma titanium aluminide sheets. Flat sheets of 100-mm width are continuously cast with a uniform thickness in a range of 1 to 2 mm. Microstructures in the direct cast sheets are characterized for understanding of the history of microstructure evolution in direct casting. The continuous casting process evolves the microstructure that is characterized by a sharp preferred orientation and fine lamellar structure in the subsurface zone of as-cast sheets. The preferred orientation develops with the 〈111〉 axis parallel to the normal direction of sheets. Development of this type of texture suggests selective stacking of the basal plane of alpha parallel to the sheet surface on solidification and subsequent transformation into gamma phase with the orientation relationship of {0001}α ∥ {111}γ. Lamellas of (γ + α2) are extensively refined in rapid cooling. Through-the-thickness microstructures are characterized by curvature of the growth direction of columnar grains along thermal gradient, increase in the fraction of gamma grains toward the center, accommodation of the thermal stress in gamma grains, and occasional appearance of shrinkage cavities in the center.
