Temperature dependence of elastic moduli and internal dilational and shear frictions of polyimide

Abstract

This paper reports temperature dependence of longitudinal and transverse velocities, elastic parameters, and dilational and transverse internal frictions for rigid rod aromatic polyimide (PI), in the temperature region between 69 and 750 K. The PI is a polybiphenyltetracarboximide of p-phenylene. Attention is given to structural change in terms of thermally activated structural relaxation of temperature regions of interest. In particular, characterization of various relaxation transitions, which are observable in a wide temperature region, is important in relation to the stress-strain properties of solid polymers, viz. to the impact strength and to anomalies in the temperature and time dependence of strength.
