There are several important surgical steps in radical retropubic prostatectomy. They include complete control of the dorsal vein complex, anatomical dissection of the prostatic apex, initial dissection of the neurovascular bundle followed by urethral transection and anatomical urethrovesical anastomosis. All steps should be performed with special caution to maximize the oncological results and to minimize the risk of postoperative sexual dysfunction and incontinence. Some of the technical aspects and pitfalls of the surgery are discussed in this paper.
