Synthesis of stilbazolium derivatives having 2-(6-dimethylamino)naphthyl group for nonlinear optics

    Abstract

    In order to enhance second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) property of l-2-(4-(dim.ethylamino)phenyl)ethenyl)pyridinium p-toluenesulfonate (DAST) by extending π-conjugation system, its analogues having a 2,6-naphthylene ring in place of a phenylene ring of DAST were prepared. These naphthylene analogues were found to show the absorption maxima at a little shorter wavelengths than the corresponding phenylene derivatives. Five out of fourteen prepared salts of the naphthylene analogues are SHG active. Two crystals, one of which is SHG active, were analyzed by X-ray crystallography.
