Synthesis of σ-π conjugated organosilicon copolymers and their optical properties

Abstract

A series of σ-π conjugated organosilicon copolymers, -[(SiMe2)m-Z]n-, m=1, 2, 3, 4, and 6, with alternating dimethylsilylene units and unsaturated groups (Z = acetylene, 4, 4'-biphenylene, and 9, 10-anthranylene) in the polymer main chain were prepared by the reaction of α, ω-dichloropermethylated oligosilanes, Cl-(SiMe2)m-Cl, with the appropriate dilithio compounds. The influence of the chain length of the dimethylsilylene unit, m, in the copolymer backbone on the electronic absorption spectra was investigated. The enhancement of the σ-π conjugation between the dimethylsilylene units and the π-conjugated units with increasing the dimethylsilylene chain length was suggested by the thermochromism.
