Synthesis and thermoelectric properties of p -type- and n -type-filled skutterudite R yM xCo 4-xSb 12 (R: Ce, Ba, Y; M: Fe, Ni)

Abstract

Single phase skutterudite compounds filled by Ce, Ba, and Y, and substituted by Fe and Ni were synthesized using the solid-state reaction method and melting reaction method. The filling atoms Ba, Ce, and Y in Sb-icosahedron voids can reduce the lattice thermal conductivity of the compounds significantly and the thermal conductivity decreased in order of the decreasing of ionic radii. It was found that the filling atoms also influenced the electrical transport properties of the compounds. Seebeck coefficient of n-type skutteride compounds increases with increasing temperature but decreases with the increasing Ni content.
