Synthesis and search for equilibrium compositions of borates with the huntite structure

Abstract

Using the Bi2O3-B2O3 solvent, single crystals of (Ho,Bi)(Al,Ga)3(BO3)4, (Yb,Bi)Al3(BO3)4:Nd3+, (Er,Bi)Al3(BO3)4:Cr3+ and (Er,Bi)Ga3(BO3)4:Cr3+ with the huntite structure have been grown by spontaneous crystallization from a flux. The achieved productivity of the melt (crystal/melt weight ratio) was 38 wt%. The crystal composition and distribution coefficients for different cation positions were studied and the dependence of the probability of congruent melting on crystal composition was discussed. X-ray powder diffraction analysis data for grown crystals are presented.
