N2 - A number of derivatives of the cyclopropenone antibiotic penitricin have been synthesized by the reaction of metalated cyclopropenone acetals with electrophiles. Studies on the antimicrobial structure-activity relationships indicated that the penitricin skeleton, hydroxymethylcyclopropenone, is indispensable for antimicrobial activity. These compounds were also found to display cytotoxic activity.
