Switching concentration/partition behavior of microdroplet contents by using flow rate

Abstract

This paper reports the control of concentration/partition behavior of microdroplet contents by flow rate of outer phase surrounding the microdroplet. When the spontaneous emulsification occurs at the interface of the microdroplets by flowing outer organic phase containing nonionic surfactant, we found that the partition amount of the solutes in aqueous microdroplet to nanodroplets surrounding the microdroplet can be changed by the flow rate of the outer organic phase. By using this phenomenon, the control of the concentration of organic dye of microdroplets is demonstrated.
