Sustained saturation in a free-electron laser oscillator at perfect synchronism of an optical cavity

    Abstract

    The sustained saturation in free electron lasers (FEL) at perfect synchronism was observed. The FEL efficiency becomes maximum at the perfect synchronism if the dimensionless beam current is sufficiently large while a transient state exists due to the laser lethargy effect. The observed efficiency detuning curve can be reproduced by the numerical simulations including a shot noise effect.
