Susceptibility and specific heat of EuSe

Abstract

The susceptibility and specific heat of pure single-crystal EuSe were carefully measured as functions of temperature in various magnetic fields. It is found that, below 1.5 kOe, a first-order transition occurs at Néel temperature TN and rather complicated spin structures exist in EuSe below TN, which cannot be described by the simple Heisenberg model. In the range 1.5 kOe < H ≤ 5 kOe, a second-order transition was observed at TN, and the susceptibility and specific heat exhibit the usual antiferromagnetic behaviour. Above 5 kOe, a large bump in the specific heat appears which can be understood with the ferromagnetic molecular field approximation.
