Abstract
This study has investigated gap winds to the west of the Soya Strait during the summer months. Low-level cool air associated with the developed Okhotsk high is dammed on the east sides of Sakhalin and Hokkaido, and enhances sea level pressure (SLP) gradient along the Soya Strait on a regional scale. The Soya Strait works as a conduit for the cool air from the Okhotsk Sea to the Japan Sea, and the outflowing air accelerates because of the along-strait SLP gradient. The intensity and duration time of the easterly gap winds depend on the activity of the Okhotsk high.
