Giant resonances at 8 ∼ 33 MeV of excitation energy in 58Ni have been studied by means of the (p→,p→/) reaction at 394 MeV. A broad bump was observed at 0°. The spin-flip and non-spin-flip components are decomposed by using polarization transfer observables. The cross sections have been calculated in both macroscopic and microscopic approaches. The strength of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR) was extracted from the non-spin-flip cross sections. The GMR was well fitted by a Lorentzian function with a centroid energy Ēx = 17.6 MeV and a width Γ = 3.9 MeV. The observed GMR exhausts about 70 ∼ 90% of the E0 energy weighted sum rule limit.
