This paper describes the techniques used to transmit ultrasonic sensor signals form the ACE-MOLE system through water supplied into the pipes of an underground pipe-jacking machine. Underground conduits for telecommunication systems are currently being changed from an open cutting and covering method to microtunneling construction using the pipe-jacking machine. Wireless techniques for transmitting sensor signals, i.e., information about the location and orientation of the driving machine are needed as the ACE-MOLE drives along the planned conduit line. We have investigated various signal transmission techniques using ultrasonic waves propagating in water flowing in the pipe and developed a prototype underwater ultrasonic transmitter and receiver.
