Structural study of liquid V2O5

Abstract

Neutron and X-ray diffraction measurements have been carried out on liquid V2O5to clarify its atomic scale structure. The neutron-diffraction structure factor, SN(Q), almost corresponds to the partial structure factor for O{single bond}O pairs, since the vanadium atom has a small coherent scattering cross-section. The first peak in the observed neutron pair-distribution function is well separated and this clearly suggests that the oxygen atoms are located at the distance of 2.76 Å around a central oxygen atom. The mixed structure factor of V{single bond}V and V{single bond}O has also been estimated from both SX(Q) and SN(Q). A model for the local structure in liquid V2O5is discussed based on these new data regarding the V{single bond}V, V{single bond}O and O{single bond}O pairs.
