Abstract

Soliton data signals at 20 and 40Gbit/s have been successfully transmitted over 2000 and 1000 km, respectively, by using erbium-doped fibre amplifiers. Bit error rates of below 10-10 were obtained with 223 - 1 pseudorandom patterns. 40Tbit/skm is the highest value yet reported in a straightline soliton transmission experiment.
